The Universidad de Murcia and the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid among the pioneers in accrediting higher education through digital credentials

September 18, 2023

We are excited to share with everyone this news, closely related to CertiDigital, through which we inform you that the Universidad de Murcia and the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid have issued during July and August their first digital credentials to students of two training programs.

For its part, the Universidad de Murcia has issued its first digital credentials on the European platform European Digital Credentials for Learning (EDC), the platform from which CertiDigital was born, and being one of the first Spanish universities that is issuing microcredentials associated with learning experiences.

For this, the microcredentials corresponding to the 4th edition of the International Course in ICT Management for CIO of Universities have been issued in collaboration with MetaRed and issued by the Professional Certification Center in Information and Communication Technologies (CERTIC) of the University of Murcia.

On the other hand, UC3M has used the Mochila Digital Universitaria program aimed at undergraduate students or first-year graduates, issuing 228 microcredentials also through the EDC Platform (European Credentials for Learning) sponsored by Europass and the European Union. This is one of the first issues of microcredentials at higher education level in Spain.

The Mochila Digital Universitaria program launched by the Community of Madrid and UC3M, is a permanent training course “pioneer” in new technologies and digital skills aimed at the university community and executed together with leading companies in the sector (Telefónica, Deloitte, Banco de Santander or Amazon among others). Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Marketing, Process Automation, Internet of Things, etc., are some of the topics taught. The program has been taught to the great satisfaction of the student.

In both cases, the digital credentials have been issued according to the ELM (European Learning Model) standard, so that they are portable to any country in the Union or any country that implements EDC. Through the Europass wallet the student can store all his/her credentials, create his/her CV and decide which credentials and with whom he/she shares them. Through the Europass wallet the student can store all his/her credentials, create his/her CV and decide which credentials and with whom he/she shares them.

The issuance according to portable standards such as EDC will be mandatory in the new microcredentials promoted by the Ministry of Universities.

On microcredentials:microcredentials certify the learning outcomes obtained in short-term learning experiences, such as a course or a short training, and it is recently that, strongly promoted by the European Union through approach recommendationsa common rules ensuring their quality, transparency, cross-border comparability, recognition and portability.

Microcredentials will enable students to bring together portfolios of learning from across institutions, bringing together a range of different competencies and areas of knowledge and skills that shape new forms of qualifications and align with employer requirements.

Higher education institutions need to rise to the challenges of digitalization and greening the economy, and to do so they must improve access and personalization to teaching, with the requirement to do so more economically given the imperatives of an ageing population.

About CertiDigital: In Spain, CertiDigital is currently underway, an interuniversity collaborative project in which 23 public partner universities participate and which is funded by the EU within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
